4 mistakes that hinder your sales as an artist (and how to avoid them)

Selling your art might seem complicated, but certain common mistakes can hold back your success.

Here are the ones I see most often among the artists I work with. This way, you'll be able to identify the obstacles you're facing (perhaps without even realizing it) and discover how to overcome them to sell better… and more!

1. Neglecting your online presence

Common mistake: Having a limited or inconsistent digital presence.

In 2025, you can no longer afford to be absent from the digital world. Many potential buyers discover artists through the Internet. An effective online presence brings you closer to your target audience and can even make you known around the world!

How to Optimize Your Online Presence:

  • Professional Website: Create an aesthetically pleasing and functional website where visitors can explore your portfolio, read your biography, and purchase your work. Including sections for testimonials and reviews helps build trust with your audience.
  • Strategic Use of Social Media: Choose a platform that resonates with you and where your target audience is active. Share your work, creation stories, and engage your audience with exclusive behind-the-scenes content. You can find several ideas for reels to create in my article: 21 Video Concepts to Post on Social Media.

You don’t need to implement all these ideas, and certainly not all at once. Pick the ones that resonate most with you and make the most sense for your current situation.

2. Poorly Defining Your Prices

Common Mistake: Undervaluing (or overvaluing) your art. Most often, I see artists undervaluing their work.

Incorrect pricing can lead to financial losses or potentially discourage buyers. If you set your prices too low, as an artist, you may grow frustrated seeing your creations sold for next to nothing. Deep down, you know your worth—and you don’t want to diminish it.

How to Set the Right Price:

  • Thorough Market Research: Analyze the prices of artists at a similar level or in the same field. Consider the size, complexity, and medium of the artwork.

  • Consider Costs and Time: Ensure your pricing covers materials, the time invested, and leaves room for profit.

  • Get Support: If this task is challenging for you, seek advice from someone experienced. And I’m not talking about your mom, who will probably tell you your new creation is worth $25,000 because it’s the most beautiful thing on earth.

3. Not Telling a Story with Your Artwork

Common Mistake: Simply selling artwork without context or storytelling.

People buy stories as much as they buy objects. An emotional connection increases the perceived value of your art. Storytelling is everywhere—it sells, and it applies to artists too. It’s no coincidence that major brands like Apple, Nike, or Coca-Cola tell a story before even selling a product.

How to Tell a Story:

  • Share the Story Behind Each Piece:
Talk about your inspiration, the creative process, and the emotions tied to your work. Use blogs, posts, or videos to engage your audience and evoke emotions in them. That’s where the magic happens.
  • Captivating Descriptions:
Craft narrative captions that invite people to explore the artwork beyond its surface. Those who step into your world are more likely to want more and feel personally addressed when you share your next creation.

4. Ignoring Follow-Up with Your Clients

Common Mistake: Failing to nurture relationships after the sale.

Retaining existing clients is often easier and more profitable than acquiring new ones. It’s much simpler to strengthen an existing relationship than to build new connections from scratch.

How to Optimize After-Sales Service:

  • Implement a Follow-Up System:
Thank your clients with a personalized message and invite them to share their feedback. Maintain periodic contact using special events as an excuse.

  • Leverage Testimonial Requests:
Use post-purchase testimonial requests if your online system offers this feature.

  • Automate with AI:
Set up a bot or an automated messaging sequence to handle the initial follow-up with your clients before you take over.

  • Newsletter:
Share updates about your projects, special offers, and upcoming exhibitions. This keeps your audience informed and engaged.

Boost Your Sales Effectively

By avoiding these mistakes, you transform your sales approach and maximize your success as an artist. Remember, your art is the cornerstone of your business, but everything surrounding it must be thoughtfully and consistently planned. Every detail matters in creating a memorable purchasing experience and building lasting relationships.
