Hi Kate, we’re super excited to welcome you to our gang of artists!
Can you introduce yourself in a few words for those who don’t know you yet?
Hi, thank you so much for having me! I'm Kate, although I go by Poopikat! I'm an illustrator who focuses on children's illustrations. I work with both traditional and digital mediums and absolutely love colour!
You illustrated a puzzle for our new collection – can you tell us what inspired you and how you went about creating the illustration?
Inspiration usually comes from my surroundings, music, and the season change. Typically, my colour palettes always reflect the current season I'm in, and so does the theme of the illustration itself. As for music, I love listening to instrumental music while I draw. When I listen to piano melodies, I find myself drawing softer, more delicate illustrations. When I listen to more Celtic-style songs, I find myself drawing more magical pieces of art.
What’s your favorite part of your work?
When it's done - haha! Just kidding. If we're talking about the process, I love when I come up with an idea and the composition just works - that's a satisfying feeling. If it's a certain part of my work, I enjoy the textures!
How do you nurture your creativity on a daily basis? What inspires you?
I recently moved to a home in the middle of nature, so that would be what inspires me on a daily basis. The bridge, the walks, the flowers, trees, everything nature!
Do you usually create while listening to music? If so, what kind of music do you enjoy listening to while working?
I kind of mentioned it earlier, but I love music scores, Celtic music, piano scores, anything instrumental when I draw. Sometimes, I enjoy a podcast or two as well but that's usually when I'm doing mindless rendering.
Are there any artistic techniques you haven’t tried yet but would love to experiment with?
Painting ~ I've done a little bit of it, but I would love to learn painting with bold brushstrokes. I'm an artist who LOVES having control when art-making, and that's why I play with pencil crayons. Painting is a whole new world to me, even if I have done it and studied it, it's just a lot harder to wrap my head around. Another experiment I'd like to try is mixing pencil crayons and pastels. I've seen a lot of artists do it, and I absolutely love the turnout!
How do you organize your creative days? Do you have a particular or ideal routine?
I usually keep the creative stuff in the morning when I have a lot of brain juice. Being a full-time artist, unfortunately, means a lot more emails, technical days, and so forth, so drawing only becomes a small part of my days sometimes. Usually it's in the morning, though.
Do you have any upcoming art projects you’d like to share with us?
Lots! For personal work, I'm building my portfolio to suit picture books a lot better. So I've started a new series called "Let's Get Published Together" on my Patreon/YouTube. As for client work, I can share that I am currently working on a graphic novel and a picture book which I'm excited to fully share soon!
Thank you Kate !
